Making water glow is a awesome activity that parents can do with their kids at home. It’s a great way to teach them something new with the help of science. Under normal light the tonic water looks fine, it’s only when you put a black light to it that gives it the glow. Find out what gives it this glow, and is water the only thing that you can try this on?
Things that you will need for the activity:
· A black light (you can find them at places like Walmart and hardware stores).
· Tonic water or a highlighter pen.
· A dark room to do the experiment
Instructions:
1. Break open the highlighter pen, and take out the felt inside.
2. Place the felt into the bottle of tonic water and let it sit for a few minutes
3. Take the bottle of water to a dark location.
4. Turn on the black light near the bottle.
What's happening? explanation:
The tonic water and the highlighter both have something called phosphors. You can’t see phosphors until you put a black light near it. That's because a black light has something called ultra violet (UV) lights. When you put the two together it glows. Parents you can take this cool activity and teach your kids about science and how things can react differently when you put them on a different kind of light. Try to get creative and put the tonic water into jello and see it it will glow as well under the black light, and remember have fun. Link
